Four Proven Methods and Types of Hydroponics Systems – Minneapolis, MN
The 4 main methods of hydroponic gardening get their names from the way in which the nutrients are delivered to the roots. Each of these systems can be used for most types of hydroponic gardening, but some are especially suited for specific situations. Our experts can help you choose the system that’s right for you after discussing your plans and showing you the available options.
Deep-Water – As the simplest system of all, it requires only a container for the nutrient-rich solution, an air pump and stone for aeration, and a net pot and media to support the plant.
Ebb and Flow – In these multi-plant systems a central reservoir holds the water and nutrient mixture. A timer controls regular filling of the containers, which are then emptied back to the reservoir. Roots stay moist at all times and are always well oxygenated.
Drip – In this system, water and nutrients are delivered to the plants through controlled emitters on a regular schedule. Excess nutrients and water are returned to the central reservoir.
Aeroponics – In aeroponics systems, plant roots are regularly misted with water and nutrients, using natural aeration. Roots are never immersed in the nutrient solution. This is the least commonly used system for home gardens.
Deep-Water Hydroponics Systems Are Simple to Set up
Deep-water culture is one of the easiest systems to build, set up and maintain. Plant’s roots hang down into oxygen-rich water and nutrients. This type of system uses a small air pump to keep the solution well oxygenated. This aeration allows plants to thrive while roots are submerged underwater. You’ll find everything you need to create your own deep-water system at a very low cost.
Most gardeners who choose the deep-water method make that choice because it’s simple, inexpensive and very productive. In fact, most deep-water systems are created by do-it-yourselfers from separate components, all available at our store. All that’s needed to get started is a container, typically a 5-gallon bucket with a lid. A net pot is inserted in or part of that lid and is filled with a medium like Hydroton to support the plant. The container is filled with a water and nutrient mix. An air pump and air stone provide needed oxygen, aeration and circulation. The plant’s roots grow in the oxygenated nutrient liquid. It’s just that simple, and is an ideal, inexpensive method for growing individual plants under grow lights.
Ebb-and-Flow or Flood-and-Drain Systems – Sunlight Supply Flo-n-Gro
An Ebb-and-Flow hydroponic system works by temporarily flooding the grow tray with nutrient solution and then draining the solution back into the reservoir. This process is repeated at regular intervals. A submerged pump connected to a timer accomplishes this process at an interval designed for the specific plant types being grown. When the timer turns the pump on, nutrient solution is pumped into the grow tray. When the timer shuts the pump off, the nutrient solution drains back into the reservoir and allows the growing medium and plant roots to stay moist while allowing fresh oxygen to reach the root base. The timer is usually set to turn on and off every couple of hours, depending on the size of the plants and the temperature and humidity.
These flood-and-drain systems are very versatile and can be used with a variety of growing media. They’re ideal for growing multiple plants with very little hassle. The grow tray or individual containers can be loaded with gravel, grow-rocks or rock wool. We offer Flo-n-Gro systems from Sunlight Supply in a variety of configurations. After researching all available systems, we’ve found these to be the most reliable and productive. The 12-site Flo-n-Gro package is the most popular system we sell.
Drip Systems – General Hydroponics Waterfarm Kit
In a drip system, the nutrient solution is delivered to the plants through drip emitters on a timed basis. The time cycle flushes the growing medium, providing the plants with fresh nutrients, water and oxygen as the emitter is dripping. The emitters are usually scheduled to run for approximately 5-10 minutes of every hour. The plant’s roots are usually supported by a medium of perlite, grow rocks or rock wool in a drip system environment.
General Hydroponics Waterfarm kits are one of the best, least expensive, and easiest ways to get started. You can grow one large plant or up to five small ones, and the system increases oxygen to the roots for vigorous growth and healthier plants. Every Waterfarm kit sold at our store comes complete with everything you need to start growing, including hydroton medium, air pump, nutrients, and complete, easy to understand instructions. All you need to add is a grow light and plants.
Aeroponic Systems – Advanced Method for Professional Growers
Aeroponics was developed in the last century at the University of Pia in Italy by Dr. Franco Massantini. In this system, plant roots are misted with water and nutrients, while getting oxygen directly from the air. Aeroponics has been proven and refined for decades and is used by scientists around the world, including NASA. Using Aeroponics, plants can receive their required daily nutrients, avoid contact with soil borne pests and fungus and may grow up to 50% faster.
Aeroponics is especially useful for cloning propagation methods. Available in units designed to nurture and start rooting 16, 32, or 64 cuttings, the EZ-Clone unit is fully enclosed to protect your delicate clones until they have achieved a lush root system and are ready to be transplanted into growing media. Over 75 improvements have been incorporated into this latest model of the EZ-Clone system, ensuring your propagation success.
